Application for Mini-Travel Grants for Conferences and Visiting Fellowships!

 

 

ARUA Centre for Excellence in Urbanization and Habitable Cities at the University of Lagos, Nigeria Calls for Travelling Grants and Visiting Fellowships

The ARUA CoE for Urbanization and Habitable Cities is a network of 10 African Universities, with support from 2 Universities in the UK. The Network has engaged in capacity building, scoping studies and stakeholder engagement in Transportation, Informality and Inequality and Urban Resilience since 2019 when it was formed. The Network is supported by the ARUA-UKRI-GCRF Partnerships Fund. It seeks to strengthen its impact in promoting Africa-Africa, and Africa-UK Scholarship through two small grant programmes. These are:

  • Conference Presentation Travel Grants
  • Mobility Grants for Doctoral Exchange/Visiting Researchers Programme

All awardees would be expected to provide brief presentations on the impact of the Grants upon return, as would be scheduled.  Kindly note that an applicant may only apply to ONE of these grants.

Timelines

Call announcement: Thursday, 6th October 2022

Call closes: Sunday, 23rd  October, 2022

Notification of Successful Applications: Friday 28th  October, 2022

Pre-travel meeting with Successful Applicants: Tuesday 8th November, 2022

Award Starts: Dates between 1st January to 30th April 2023

Scheduled Presentation of Impact: Tuesday 2nd of May to Friday, 12th of May, 2023

1. CONFERENCE PRESENTATION TRAVEL GRANTS

Value of Award: Up to 2,600GBP per awardee

Maximum Duration of stay: 4 nights

Period: 3rd January to 30th April, 2023

Purpose: The Grant will be made to support  Full Paper Presentations at an ARUA Member University or Network Partner University or any other African University Conference.

 

Requirements: Applicants will be required to provide:

  • An acceptance letter to present a paper at a specified conference at an ARUA University or Network Partner University or other African University.
  • Evidence of affiliation with the Network Partner Universities
  • A copy of, (or link to) the full paper to be presented

 

Other Considerations:

  • Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement that they are not receiving funding from any other institution for the same purpose.
  • The ARUA Centre of excellence must be duly acknowledged in the conference publication and other publication that emanates from the sponsorship.
  • The Grant consists of travel and subsistence support. The travel component shall be reimbursed upon provision of receipt of ticket payment. Submission of boarding passes is required. Subsistence shall be paid upfront.

 

Eligibility:

  • Applicants shall be domiciled in an African country, and affiliated with the Network Partner Universities to be eligible.
  • This grant is open to all cadres of academic researchers.
  • Female researchers are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Postgraduate students and early career researchers are strongly encouraged to apply.

2. MOBILITY GRANTS FOR DOCTORAL EXCHANGE/VISITING RESEARCHERS PROGRAMME

Value of Award: Up to 5,200 GBP per awardee

Maximum Duration of Stay: 10-12 days

Period: 3rd January to 30th April, 2023

Purpose: The Grant will be made to support short academic visits to Network Partner University in Africa, in addition to Stirling University and Heriot-Watt University in the UK. The purpose of the visit could be to write-up part of the thesis (doctoral candidates) or other academic writings (such as part of a book chapter or journal), in addition to networking with colleagues at the hosting University. It is also acceptable to use the mobility grant to provide support, such as curriculum development, or research administration support at the host University. It is mandatory that Fellows provide a seminar-presentation in their host unit during the period. Such seminar would be in a blended format to allow knowledge sharing with colleagues from other Network Universities.

Host Universities:

The following Universities have indicated interest in hosting a Fellow.

  1. University of Cape Town: Invites a research stay for applicants whose areas of specialization should include: Construction Management/Urban planning/Built Environment disciplines. Host: Abimbola Windapo, Professor of Construction Management, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
  2. Centre for Urban Research & Planning, University of Zambia requests a senior visiting researcher who shall support the formulation of a PhD Programme in Urban Planning at the University of Zambia. Host: Dr Garikai Membele, Centre for Urban Research & Planning
  3. Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Stirling Is interested in hosting a visitor with strong housing research interests. Host: Prof Professor Isobel Anderson FCIH, Chair in Housing Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Stirling.
  4. Visiting Fellows in Project management in a global context, Organisational learning through simulation of construction processes, Public-private partnerships for infrastructure delivery and other construction topics are encouraged to apply to Heriot-Watt University. Host: Professor Stephen Ogunlana, School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society
  5. Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos, Nigeria is interested in hosting Doctoral Candidates in a built Environment Discipline and Early Career Researchers seeking research administration experience. Host: Prof T.G Nubi, Director, Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development.
  6. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria requests a visiting researcher with strong interest in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) in a global context, mortgage-backed securities, private sector participation in affordable housing and infrastructure finance and other real estate-related topics. Host: Prof. Abel Olaleye, Department of Estate Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

 

Limited spaces are available for Visits to other African Universities but this MUST be accompanied by a letter of support from the host.

 

Requirements: Applicants will be required to provide:

  • Evidence of affiliation to a partner university (whether as a staff or doctoral candidate).
  • A 2page letter of motivation which would include a work plan.
  • A letter of introduction from Supervisor (for Doctoral candidates) OR Line Manager (Head of Department, Dean etc) on official university letterhead.
  • A 3page CV.

 

Other Considerations:

  • Please note that primary data collection is not eligible for funding
  • Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement that they are not receiving funding from any other institution for the same purpose.
  • The Grant consists of Travel and Subsistence. The travel component shall be reimbursed upon the provision of receipt of ticket payment. Submission of boarding passes is required. Subsistence shall be paid upfront. It does not cover a research salary.
  • For writing stays, It is mandatory to submit a journal article with the Network’s African Journal for Housing and Sustainable Development Journal within 6 weeks of completion of the Fellowship.
  • The ARUA Centre of excellence must be duly acknowledged in any publication that may emanate from the sponsorship.
